Savary lesson

By ANDREW DILLON

PETER DE SAVARY learned his first tough lesson in football as new Millwall chairman last night.

The colourful tycoon watched his gutsy Lions crash out of the Carling Cup after taking Premiership strugglers Birmingham to penalties.

But De Savary also saw the more unsavoury side of football as minor crowd disturbances cast a shadow over a pulsating cup tie.

Five Brum fans were arrested and the tea bar in the away stand shut down when staff suffered abuse from visiting supporters.

Five minutes into the match around 100 Lions supporters ripped up security netting and charged towards the away end.

There was never a chance of rival fans clashing but police had to restore order.

De Savary jetted into London yesterday to kick off his reign as the new supremo at troubled Millwall.

The shipping and hotel tycoon, worth around £34million, put his foot in it by comparing the fans to ‘hordes of under- privileged Africans’.

De Savary said: “Football fans are like disgruntled dockers, stevedores or union members.
